Concentrate
- (grain), use pre-bagged goat feed or prepare your own balanced ration.
Free Choice of Salt or Mineral Salt and baking soda for rumen function.
HEALTH - Vaccinations: CD/T (to prevent
enterotoxemia, associated with high grain intake, and Tetanus), at least at 8
and 12 weeks of age and yearly boosters there after. Give booster to does 30-60
days before kidding.
Parasites: (worms) Panacur (safeguard) or Ivermectin
wormer in correct dosage to prevent and control.
Coccidiosis: Usually
affects kids, diarrhea is usually a symptom. (See your veterinarian for diagnosis
and treatment)
Signs of Illness: Any change in normal behavior Inactivity
Eats less or not at all
Urinates more than usual or lack of urination
Change in color or consistency of manure
Grinds teeth (usually a sign
of pain)
Changes in milk ( blood, flakes, clots etc...)
Temperature
above or below normal (goat normal range is 101.5 to 105 degrees).
Coat becomes
rough or dull or hair falls out
Color of gums and lining around eyes should
be pink - Pale or blue may indicate illness.
HOUSING:
Protect from wind, precipitation, sun, predators, dampness, and injury.
FOOT
CARE: Prevent foot rot with clean, dry housing, and proper foot trimming.
Keep hooves trimmed with a sharp hoof knife or hoof trimmers about every 6 weeks.
MARKET GOAT TATOOING: All market goats
should be tattooed and registered. Tattooing will be done the third Saturday in
May. This year that will be from 10:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Hartford Fairgrounds
Goat Barn. For those wishing to participate there will be a rate of gain competition
this year at the Hartford fair. If you wish to participate you must have your
goat weighed at the time of tattooing and again Sunday at the fair.
